The Suffield Boys Varsity Basketball team had a great winter break. The team took time out of their winter break to practice and get ready for some tough games they would have to play during their time off. The team had to play Avon, a LL school who is known for their strength and size. The Academy of Computer Science, who were 3-0 going into their game against Suffield, and Lyman Memorial, a team who has always been a threat in the state.
Suffield first had to play on the road against Avon, a team who is very well known for being tall, strong, and athletic. Suffield played a hard game, taking the game into overtime and winning 67-65. Suffield’s sophomore point guard, Nate Gunn, ended the game with 24 points and Noah Schermerhorn, Suffield’s senior point guard, ended the game with 21 points. Coach Barile, Suffield’s Varsity Coach, said, “in all my years of coaching, this is the first time in my coaching career that I have beaten Avon. This is a special moment for me, boys.”
Suffield hosted The Academy of Computer Science in their home opener on December 27. This was one of the best games the team has played all season. Everything was going right for them. Many guys were hitting 3’s, other guys were getting rebounds and layups for the team. The team dominated Comp Sci, beating them 75-54. Parker Abbiatti led the way with 18 points with Logan Baril close behind with 14 points. Suffield showed that they were a dynamic threat as well, with Colin Faber hitting three 3 pointers in the first half, totaling 13 points by the end of the game. Freshman PJ Halon also had 2 points in the game, hitting free throws in the 4th quarter to score his first varsity points.
Suffield hosted Lyman Memorial for their final game of the winter break. Suffield started the game off hot as Logan Baril hit a 3 pointer to set the tempo for the rest of the game. After that, Suffield put the pedal to the metal and never looked back. Suffield destroyed Lyman Memorial, beating them 88-37. Logan Baril led the scoring with 16 points with Ryan Organ close behind scoring 13 points. Noah Schermerhorn scored 11 points with three 3 pointers in the contest. And Nate Gunn scored 8 points in the game, including a dunk in the 3rd quarter from him to get the crowd hyped up. Coach Barile was able to give the young guys on the varsity team a chance to play in the game as well. Freshman Colby Gunn scored his first varsity basket, and even ended the game with 12 points. Aiden “Jimmy” Raigon scored his first varsity bucket as well, ending the game with 6 points. Finally, TJ Ceasar also had 2 points in the contest, scoring his first varsity bucket in his career.
Suffield is looking dangerous as they continue to get better as the season goes along. The team plays Stafford, Tolland, Somers, and Rockville over the next 2 weeks.
