Suffield V.S. Granby on January 9th was a game noted by many because of the ranking of the opposing team. Granby is currently second in the league, having only lost two games. And Suffield is a younger team that has gone 7-8 this season so far. Suffield V.S. Granby set up the hard-fought wins of the JV and Freshman team and the near-miss from the Varsity team. Here’s a recap of the passionate and resilient fight from the SHS Boys’ Basketball teams:
JV Game Recap
The JV game was a tight, back and forth affair from the opening tip. Suffield took a close trail into halftime, the scoreboard showing Granby at 31 and Suffield at 26—you could feel the energy in the gym. In the second half, a big moment came when Suffield’s JJ Wiley knocked down a three after a Granby foul, and the play boosted Suffield’s momentum for a stretch. Granby’s No. 10 got hurt in the mix, which added a jolt to the game, and then Suffield’s No. 10 fouled Granby’s No. 11, keeping things heated on the floor. A foul on Suffield’s No. 14 kept the pace up and reminded everyone this was a game that wouldn’t quit.
Suffield started to press full court and that decision paid off, giving the team a bunch of extra possessions and forcing Granby into rushed plays. Midway through the third, Granby briefly snuck ahead by one, but Andrew VanCott stepped up with a deep three that put Suffield back on top. Granby tried to answer with another long-range shot, but Suffield’s defense locked it down and snuffed out the comeback attempt. When the final numbers came out Suffield had earned the win, proving that their pressure defense and late-game shot could close out a tight game.
Varsity Game Recap
The varsity match-up opened with a spark from Suffield’s Logan Baril, who knocked in the first points of the game. Brady Driscoll showed some real hustle, driving to the rim and keeping the offense moving. The pace stayed even early, with Granby trading baskets and keeping it close. A rough stretch in the first half saw Driscoll fouling Granby’s No. 3, and then a scramble near the 2:28 mark left Granby with a small lead and Suffield chasing. PJ Halon stepped up with a bucket to trim the gap as Granby took the ball out of bounds and the Bears stretched possession time.
As the game wore on, both sides traded baskets and moments of missed chances kept the score tight. Granby’s pressure and a few turnovers made it feel like Suffield could jump back in at any moment, but Granby extending their lead, and despite a solid effort from Suffield, especially from Baril and Driscoll, the Bears finished strong and held on to win, 43-32.
What this means for Suffield
The night underscored a few clear strengths for Suffield: a deep bench that can bring energy and pressure on defense, and players who can step up in clutch moments. The JV game showed how a full court press can flip the script and generate easy points in transition, while the Varsity squad highlighted the importance of staying tight on defense and continuing to push for offensive gains even when the scoreboard isn’t in their favor.
In the end, Suffield put up an incredible match against the second highest team in the league, and came away with an amazing showcasing of their skills and team efforts.
Looking ahead
Suffield’s got a lot of positives to build on. If they keep pressuring teams in transition, cut down fouls at key moments, and keep feeding the hot hands like Baril and Driscoll, they’ll keep giving themselves chances in close games. The takeaway is simple: When the defense turns up the heat and the offence finds a rhythm, this team can close out games and stay competitive in every match-up.
