As the weather cools and winter sports return, the Suffield High School wrestling team is preparing to hit the mats with focus and determination. With the leadership of Coaches Matt Mangeli and Trey, this year’s group is entering the season with high expectations, new energy, and a few fresh faces ready to make an impact.
For senior wrestler Amelia Hosack, confidence and excitement are at an all-time high as practices begin. “I’m feeling pretty confident,” she said. “I feel like it’s going to be a good season. Looking at our lineup, it seems like we have a fair amount of people, so I’m feeling positive.” Amelia, who has been a key member of the team for several years, has her sights set on qualifying for the New England Championships this year after narrowly missing out last season. “I got out in the blood round last year,” she explained. “If I can just push one more round, I’ll make it to New England.”
But success for Hosack isn’t just about personal goals. She’s also focused on helping the team build depth across weight classes. “We really need more lightweights and more girls overall,” she said. “Last year we had a strong team, but we’re hoping to build even more balance.” Recruiting new athletes, especially for the lower weight categories, remains one of the team’s top priorities.
On the other end of the scale, senior Samuel Wilcox is working toward earning a varsity spot in the heavyweight division. “My main goal is to get varsity in the heavyweight slot,” he said. “I’m trying to get my weight up to 280 so I can compete with Yasin—he’s a tough opponent.” While Wilcox admits that his competitor has more off-season experience, he’s confident that his strength and drive will make a difference. “He’s a lot stronger now, but I think I’ve got the strength over him,” he said.
Both wrestlers spoke highly of their coaching staff, crediting them for their dedication and intensity. “Coach Plano taught me a lot—he really helped us find our rhythm,” Amelia shared. “His style worked well for a lot of wrestlers.” Sam added with a laugh, “Coach Rock’s not my favorite, but he’s tough on me—and that’s probably what I need.”
As the team prepares for Hell Week, a grueling week of running, drilling, and conditioning to start the season, spirits remain high despite the challenges ahead. “I’m not ready for all the running and leapfrogs,” Amelia joked, “but I’m still happy it’s happening. I love wrestling—it’s worth it.”
With persistence and plenty of sweat on the mats, the Suffield High wrestling team is ready to prove itself once again this winter season.
