Suffield’s Varsity Baseball took on Notre Dame West Haven for their home opener at Bruce Park. The boys won 11-7 in exciting fashion led by Senior Logan Bonazelli on the bump.

Coming into the game Bonazelli knew that NDWH would be a threatening opponent but after throwing 108 pitches and recording 7 strikeouts, their opposition had been outplayed. Early in the game the boys fell behind 6-1 but rallied in the 5th and 6th inning putting up 10 runs. Senior Dashel O’Dell blasted a 3-run triple sparking Suffield’s comeback and was quickly followed by a Single knocked by Suffield’s All State Catcher Noah Schermerhorn.
The game was a mental battle for Suffield and it goes to show the grit in these players and months of contribution to their training. When asked about preparation, Bonazelli stated that he “worked with teammates and did drills trying to get closer” [to his teammates]. This proved true when Suffield was able to bear down and come to life late in the game. During the interview with Bonazelli, he also mentioned his physical well-being and spoke on flexibility: “I realize when I am stretched out I can throw a lot harder” he said. When asked about his velocity increase and the training he did over the practice period, Logan explained “if I can keep my head in a good space I can be a good pitcher”. Suffield is looking hot and a strong season is very likely. Hopefully this game can set a tone for the underdogs during the rest of the season.
