Thursday, August 21st, was a big day for Suffield High School! For the first time all summer, the high school was filled with students – more specifically, eager freshmen who got to see our school with fresh eyes! Upperclassmen lead tours for each student and club members hosted tables for 25 different school organizations at the Activities Fair – which was shown to the incoming students at the end of their tours.
To kickstart the day, freshmen joined the halls of SHS with their assigned upperclassman partner. Signs, posters, staff, and students greeted the newcomers as they were led to the auditorium to begin the tours with a presentation about all the school has to offer. After the presentation came to a close, freshmen were shown around the halls, exploring their new home for the next four years.
“The personalized tours are working really well and a lot of the kids… seem to be feeling more comfortable about going into high school, getting their questions answered.” – Noora Khaled (Senior)
Ending each tour was the Activities Fair – tables set up in the Commons that showcased our many clubs and sports. On each table was a poster filled with information for the students to get a sense of what organization they may enjoy being in for the new school year. If any students did find an interest in one or more of the groups, they were invited to give out their name and email in order to be contacted later. The current high school students saw many kids interested or in consideration of joining a club. Junior Ethan Boldt spoke a bit on that, “I think they’re [the freshmen] doing pretty good, I’ve had a couple people show some interest in Morning Update, and I’ve gotten three sign ups [so far].”
Overall it was a great turn out for recruiting some new students to be a part of our high school programs. To the freshman, we hope you are less afraid for your first year at the high school, and felt that the tours prepared you well. We also hope the freshman will have fun meeting new people through these organizations and know that the upperclassman will be happy to invite them in. Our high school students are excited to welcome the new freshman into our wildcat family and look forward to seeing everyone back at school!
