Whether you’re saving up for college, concert tickets, or just need a reason to leave the house a few times a week, summer jobs don’t have to be miserable. Here are some student-friendly options that don’t make you dread every waking moment of your break:
Local Bakery or Cafe
Around town, and surrounding areas, there are plenty of bakeries or cafes that are looking for new hires – people with a bright personality and a warm smile (And good with memorizing drink recipes)
Perks: Free pastries (sometimes), chill music, and potential latte art skills
Downside: The early shifts if you’re not a morning person
Stocking or Front Desk at a Small Store
Think: bookshops, garden centers, boutique stores – slower-paced than big chains and usually less stressful. Bright personalities and a willingness to help customers are usually required.
Library Assistant
Because let’s be honest- who doesn’t want to spend their summer in a place of quietness, air conditioned, and full of memes about Dewey Decimal drama. What’s not to love?
Perfect for bookworms who would rather be around books than people (Sadly, you may have to deal with the people, too).
Pet Sitter or Dog Walker
Do you love animals? Do you love going on walks? Then may I propose Pet Sitter or Dog Walker? It’s basically a wellness job. Check off multiple boxes from your summer checklist at once!
Babysitting (for Chill Kids)
Pro tip: Look for families where the kids are older and mostly just need you to make sure they don’t set anything on fire. Bonus points if they already know how to microwave their own mac & cheese.
Game Store or Comic Shop Worker
If you like gaming or fandoms, these jobs feel more like extended hangouts than actual labor. Customers are constantly looking to talk to someone about their gaming experiences- what better way to share your knowledge than that?
Camp Counselor (If You’re Energetic)
If you like kids, themed days, and random dance-offs, then this job is for you. (Avoid if you hate yelling, glitter, or sunscreen) Days packed with high energy, arts and crafts, and possibly a cheesy camp song or two.
Freelance/Online Work
Design on Canva, resell clothes online, make TikToks for small businesses, or run someone’s dog’s instagram. Gen Z = built different.
Custodial or Maintenance Help at Schools
Custodial or Maintenance work is usually pretty straight-forward: low-pressure, no customers, and you already know the building. Plus, fewer people = fewer awkward encounters.
(Suffield Public Schools is looking for student help. More information on the Suffield Public Schools website)
Helping Neighbors with Random Stuff
Simple things like lawn mowing, tech help, tutoring, organizing garages – it’s like being a freelance neighborhood wizard.
Not every summer job has to be a soul-sucking shift at the local fast food joint. Pick something that pays just enough to be worth it – without destroying your will to live.
